It is the foundation of regenerative agriculture and a farmer’s most valuable asset. If your soil is healthy, the crops will thrive, maximizing sustainability and farm profitability.
Soil is a complex structure comprised of many biotic and abiotic elements including microorganisms, minerals, nutrients, and added fertilizers – all working together to create the perfect environment for plants to flourish. Simply put, just as mother nature requires balance to function smoothly, so does soil. We need to make sure there’s a good mix of biotic and abiotic elements in the soil. This balance is what makes soil fertile, or in other words, healthy.
Healthy soil, with its enhanced ability to combat diseases, resist pest infestations, and promote root development, ultimately leads to improved yields.
Role of Organic Matter
Organic matter is crucial for soil fertility as it acts as a nutrient source for microorganisms and enhances soil structure, improving water and nutrient retention, thus aiding plants in accessing what they need for stronger growth.
One indication of soil health is its porosity. Porous soil is better at trapping air, water, and organic matter – all things required for optimal plant growth. It also ensures appropriate aeration and moisture retention that is essential for root development. In contrast, compact soil restricts root development, adversely impacting plant health.
